\nDead poets wake in a tremendous castle,
\nall dark beams, fireplaces, stone stone stone.
\nPop-era people flash on Middle-earth,
\nbut older types (like Byron, deadly with boredom)
\nset them straight. They point out and explain
\nrunes, the wolf and ouroboros
\nmotifs, the giant scattered meadhorns
\nand outsized chairs \u2013 this is
\nValhalla. Someone academic, peering
\nthrough a window-slit at a misty waste,
\nasks where the heroes are, who train by hacking
\neach other apart all day, then drink all night?
\nNot to mention the Valkyries \u2026
\nAnd Coleridge, more than usually stoned,
\nlaughs, Do you think someone would fight for us?<\/em>
\n(At which Pet\u0151fi and D\u2019Annunzio
\nfrown.) But now the latest crop of dead
\nnag about dinner. Since most of the place is a freezer
\nand always full, they\u2019re well-supplied
\nwith venison and auroch, though Marianne Moore
\nsays yet again she would kill for a salad.
\nSomething possesses Ashbery, who tries
\nto pull an ornamental sword
\nfrom a wall, and collapses. Where \u2013
\nsomeone asks inevitably \u2013 are the gods?
\nBut not even the oldest inmate,
\nnot Pound or the Beowulf-poet, knows
\nthey are off forever trashing the Cabaret Voltaire.
