But every time you touch the phone your capillaries shrivel. <\/p>\n
Last night the witch almost got away <\/p>\n
clutching your daughter, sliver of silver, white-armed,<\/p>\n
honeybird tattoo. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s too late, anymore, for latches or key codes.<\/p>\n
You strike him to stone with a glass of hurled milk,<\/p>\n
poke the shards, grown doughy <\/p>\n
with so much water, through a grate under the street, <\/p>\n
but they cling to your wet fingers like resin.<\/p>\n
You have to shake them, shake them loose. <\/p>\n
Now, perhaps he\u2019ll rise severally from the sewer, <\/p>\n
tear through the countryside with his brothers, stomp villagers. <\/p>\n
Your shilly-shallying carries off everyone. <\/p>\n
You clasp the phone, tell him: Don\u2019t lie.<\/p>\n
Your skin pricks in the super-heated air.<\/p>\n
Her lips are white.<\/p>\n
She\u2019s so gullible. <\/strong><\/p>\n
