A poem is a fragile thing<\/strong>\r\n  like a life \u2014 so ephemeral, so moved<\/strong>\r\nby the random laws of the cosmos<\/strong>\r\n  the elements, gravity ...<\/strong>\r\n\r\nA poem is a useless thing,<\/strong>\r\n  like a wasted life \u2014 all <\/strong>\r\nits meaning in the living, the rending, the<\/strong>\r\n  interpreting. Begins and ends<\/strong>\r\nwith the blinkers of the observer.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nA poem is but a small fragment<\/strong>\r\n  of a larger thing, obscured in the making<\/strong>\r\n(like tonight\u2019s mountain moon)<\/strong>\r\n  by clouds and drizzle.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nWriting a poem may seem pointless<\/strong>\r\n  Who will read it? Who will understand it?<\/strong>\r\nIt disperses to the elements<\/strong>\r\n  even in the writing<\/strong>\r\n  even in the sounding<\/strong>\r\n\r\nWe do it regardless \u2014<\/strong>\r\na gesture in search of a purpose.<\/strong><\/pre>\n

\nIan Irvine is an Australian-based poet\/lyricist, fiction writer and non-fiction writer:<\/strong<\/span
\n 
\nHis work has featured in many Australian and international publications, including <\/strong>Fire<\/strong><\/i><\/span> (UK) \u2018Anthology of 20<\/strong><\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> Century and Contemporary Poets,\u2019 (2008) which contained the work of poets from over 60 nations.<\/span> His work has also appeared in a number of Australian national poetry anthologies, and he is the author of <\/span>three books<\/span> and co-editor of many more (including <\/span>Scintillae 2012,<\/i><\/span> an anthology of work by over 50 Victorian and international writers and poets). He currently teaches writing and literature at Bendigo TAFE and Victoria University (Melbourne) and lives with fellow writer Sue King-Smith and their children on a 5 acre block near Bendigo, Australia.<\/span>
