\nWhile you sit at a blank page or screen
\nfor hours, brain-dead, something
\nmadly inspired is filling
\nthat whiteness and more. You may be
\nits hero, your impasse its theme
\nor only mentioned in acknowledgements;
\nbut rest assured, its work
\nis brilliant. While you\u2019re dancing
\n(in one of those scenes I don\u2019t believe in,
\nhaving only seen them on television:
\nflared armpits, flying sweat, the desire
\nto be a machine and break),
\nthe dialectic is lying
\non an unwholesome couch
\nthat subtly fills the sky, your whole era
\ntrying by any means to stop it moaning.
\nA peasant girl favored,
\nmigrating to the city, by employment
\nin sex or electronics may perceive,
\nhandling parts, a fine curve linking
\nthem with earlier dung, her secret
\nsigh a word the future mispronounces.
\n(Meanwhile the hobbits reveal
\ntheir secret plan, their true malignancy,
\nriding orcs into battle.)
\n 
\nCleverness grows with time. Now
\nI\u2019m clever enough not to buy
\n\u201cthe individual\u201d from discount racks,
\nor anywhere. After several bad hours
\nyou walk out
\ninto context. But context leaves a void,
\naround which it disposes
\ncars, humidity,
\ndisordered passing kids, other props and prompts,
\nthe rising seas, fractured storyline.
\nOne only fails into some greater triumph.
\nYou might end there. Not.
\n<\/strong>
