A Poem by Mitchel Krockmalnik Grabois"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nEach room number<br \/>\nin this adobe motel<br \/>\nhas a symbol<br \/>\nOur room number<br \/>\n107<br \/>\nhas a yellow quarter-moon beside it<br \/>\nand some black stars<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nNext door<br \/>\nthe number106<br \/>\nis pierced by lightning bolts<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMy wife and I spend a quiet night<br \/>\nsnuggling<br \/>\nand watching evangelical TV for its comedic value<br \/>\nIt is far funnier than Comedy Central<br \/>\nMany of the jokes are stale<br \/>\nbut not as stale as Leno and Letterman<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nwhile the neighbors in<br \/>\n106<br \/>\nscream at each other<br \/>\nas if there was never anything in the world that they hated more<br \/>\nthan each other<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe next night they begin again<br \/>\nMy wife and I look at each other<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWithout saying anything<br \/>\nwe nod in agreement<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI knock on their door<br \/>\nat first quietly<br \/>\nthen more vehemently<br \/>\nas if I were a cop<br \/>\nand had the right<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe husband comes to the door<br \/>\nwearing a wife-beater<br \/>\na tattoo of a marijuana leaf on his left shoulder<br \/>\n<em>Who the fuck are you?<\/em> he asks<br \/>\nI motion with my head.<em> I\u2019m next door,<\/em> I say<br \/>\n<em>TV too loud for ya,<\/em> he asks, in a threatening voice<br \/>\nI can hear perfectly well\u2014there\u2019s no TV, only him and his wife<br \/>\nI hear her grumbling<br \/>\nas if angry at their being interrupted<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em>My wife and I,<\/em> I say,<br \/>\n<em>were wondering if you\u2019d like to change rooms<\/em><br \/>\nHe looks at me, suspicious.<em> Do you have a fridge,<\/em> he asks<br \/>\n<em>A little one. A hotel fridge<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Does it work?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yeah.<\/em><br \/>\nI know because my wife had put some cuties\u2014little tangerines\u2014in there to keep cool<br \/>\n<em>Ours is broke,<\/em> he says, <em>I hate warm beer<\/em><br \/>\nSo we switch rooms<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nAs soon as we get in, my wife and I<br \/>\nfeel our tempers rise<br \/>\nIt\u2019s not a Stephen King thing<br \/>\na cursed car, a cursed hotel<br \/>\nwe\u2019re just ready to let go<br \/>\nto get in the spirit of<br \/>\nAmerica<br \/>\nthe intersection of madness and violence<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe previous couple<br \/>\nhad left an old metal cowbell on the bed<br \/>\nI\u2019m thinking, a cowbell?<br \/>\nas my wife picks it up and hurls it at me<br \/>\nI don\u2019t know if she\u2019s trying to hit me<br \/>\nor is just performing a symbolic act<br \/>\nbut in any case I duck<br \/>\nand it misses<br \/>\nand smashes into the wall<br \/>\nthe wall our room shares with 107<br \/>\nour former room<br \/>\nWe hear the couple stop making love<br \/>\nThey\u2019re noisy fuckers and when they suddenly stop<br \/>\nI hear the Sounds of Silence<br \/>\nas Paul Simon put it<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI was trained in the Israeli martial art Krav Maga<br \/>\nthe deadliest fighting form ever invented<br \/>\nThe last time I used it was when I was in the Israeli army<br \/>\nwhen I was eighteen though twenty<br \/>\nI killed two Palestinians<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhen I got out of the army I decided not to immigrate to Israel after all<br \/>\neven though I had been so enthusiastic after the 1967 War<br \/>\nwhich occurred when I was still in high school<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nFacing my wife, her hands free of cowbells or other weapons<br \/>\nI feel the old Krav Maga training churning through my muscles<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMy wife looks around for something else to throw<br \/>\nShe decides on the TV but it\u2019s bolted to the table<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mitchell-Poet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mitchell-Poet-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mitchell Poet\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2859\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mitchell-Poet-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mitchell-Poet-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mitchell-Poet-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mitchell-Poet-400x533.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Mitchell Krockmalnik Grabois\u2019 poems and fictions have appeared in hundreds of literary magazines in the U.S. and abroad.
