\nInitially the inscription
\nwas thought to be ideograms,
\nthen letters, then some intermediate stage,
\ninsofar as that progression
\ncould be assumed, here. All admired
\nthe whimsical beauty
\nof the forms, their discipline,
\nthe paradoxical impression
\nof urgency. Computers
\nwould soon enough resolve
\nthe question and the larger mystery;
\nbut some researchers
\n 
\nperversely wished
\nthe issue could be left
\nto imagination, their sense
\nof what had been said.
\nThey questioned if the matrix were, in fact,
\ncliff, or had once been a wall,
\nsay of a palace. They felt,
\ngiven the strangeness, that it hardly mattered
\nif the obstacles were grit, heat, earthly
\ndistances, or vacuum, cumbersome
\nsuits, hundreds of light years and the problems
\nof work in vacuum and with so much past.
\nThey wondered if the inscription
\nhad been written by no one
\nbut was itself life carving
\nitself, and whether they
\nwere both the message and its addressee.<\/strong>
