\nIn Kavre,
\nnear the village, \u2018Baluwa\u2019,
\nI heard
\nthe chatter
\nof young kids
\nnot yet corroded
\nby the parade of the broken bricks
\nand the uprooted
\nroadside metal railings
\nin the streets of Kathmandu,
\nas they played
\nmarbles on the buffalo fields.
\nIt was a poem
\nI\u2019d forgotten.
\nIt was a jingle
\nnot yet crushed
\nby the voracious jaws
\nof the bull dozers.
\nIt brought back
\nin a rush
\nthe Nepal
\nI\u2019d known:
\nthe rhythm of children
\nplaying in streets
\nfree of the racket,
\nand danger, of passing trucks.
\nIn Kavre
\nnear the village, \u2018Baluwa\u2019,
\nI heard the song
\nof life against life.
\nI sat on the porch
\nof the old hut
\nand through
\nthe arched gateway
\nwatched the
\nwisps of steam float upward
\nfrom wiry ferns
\nto kiss
\nthe cuckoo
\nbirds nest .
