\nflicker-of-smoldering-embers-lay-in-ashes-by-shuttershock<\/a>

\n 
\nBeneath the bedded ash the ember curls and dies
\nIts memories drift towards the sky, reaching grey fingers
\nUp the blackened grate towards the early morning stars
\n 
\nWithin the silent room the ghost of whisky lingers
\nIts breath testament to those who drank there earlier
\nSharp warmth waiting to greet the breakfast comers
\nSearching out fresh fat to chew,
\nCrackling beneath the griddle.
\n 
\nWhat memories fold and steel towards those stars?
\nWhispered over tumblers in the late hour of the night.
\nOur minds’ stained glass distorting light behind our eyes,
\nColouring opinion, casting motes of floating
\nDust adrift upon the ebb and flow of our remembered history.
\n 
\nBetween those whispered words, hushed tones,
\nCracks of lightning laughter quick to smite,
\nComes the ticking of the clock
\nMeasuring out both time and truth,
\nIllusive in the midnight hush:
\n 
\nNo longer rights or wrongs but
\nWicked witches casting spells
\nAgainst which we pitch ourselves
\nthe heroine.
\n 
\nNo longer simple kindnesses bestowed
\nBut kingdoms and vast fortunes gifted
\nWhilst ungrateful greedy hands would
\nSnatch from us our mercy, offering only
\nEmpty embers’ ashes in return
\n 
\nOur youth no longer ordinary but
\nFraught with Hogarth’s excesses
\nOf hedonistic, narcissistic, nihilistic
\nIndulgent pleasures
\n 
\nFirst kisses love stories, first cuts a battlefield
\nBled out over a lifetime, mingled with gin and
\nAbsinthe, as absent hearts refused to return
\nAnd those that did grew fat and unforgiving
\n 
\nAh! Such heady thoughts of heady days.
\n 
\nConversation, like the fire, soaked up fuel
\nGrew higher.
\nSpat a little, blushed red hot
\nSmoked, smoldered and raged
\nBefore dying.
\n 
\nTopics exhausted and sapped to ash
\nColourful opinions drained to grey
\nAs the bottle emptied
\nAnd the clinker built
\nAs the dawn broke
\nAnd nought more
\nThere was to stoke
\nFrom the gaping
\nDrooling
\nDrooping
\nJaws of two tired friends.
\n 
\nTo bed, then.
\n 
\nLet the last breath of whisky haunt the hearth.
\n 
\nLet the stars claim their stories from the grate.
\n 
\nLet a hundred more stories await us
\n 
\nFor the telling.
\n

\nMarion Grace Woolley studied at the British Record Industry Trust
\n(BRIT) School of Performing Arts, Croydon. After obtaining an MA in
\nLanguage & Communication Research from the University of Cardiff, she
\ndeclared that she’d had enough of academia and decided to run away to
\nAfrica.
\n 
\nBalancing her creative impulses with a career in International
\nDevelopment, she worked and travelled across Africa, Australia,
\nArmenia, and a few other places beginning with ‘A’. In 2009, Marion
\nhelped to oversee the publication of the first Dictionary of Amarenga
\ny’Ikinyarwanda (Sign Language) in Rwanda, where she currently lives.
\n 
\nThe same year, Marion was shortlisted for the Luke Bitmead Bursary for
\nNew Writers. She is an associate member of the Society of Authors. Her
\nlatest release, Those Rosy Hours at Mazandaran, is due out with
\nGhostwoods Books in February 2015.
