A Poem by Steve de France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>One cloudy day in 1945,\u00a0<br \/>\nI played alone in a vacant lot\u00a0<br \/>\nacross from the Central Hotel.\u00a0<br \/>\nDigging roads for my fire<br \/>\nengine. It was small, red,\u00a0<br \/>\nand made of cast metal.\u00a0<br \/>\nSuddenly, I saw my mother\u00a0<br \/>\nstanding next to a man\u00a0<br \/>\nin uniform. She called to me.\u00a0<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWe were living in a cheap hotel<br \/>\nin Redondo Beach.\u00a0<br \/>\nThe Central Hotel.\u00a0<br \/>\nBuilt in the twenties or so.\u00a0<br \/>\nWooden fire escapes.\u00a0<br \/>\nTransoms.\u00a0<br \/>\nBathroom down the hall.\u00a0<br \/>\nFilled with smoke,\u00a0<br \/>\nwhiskey voices,\u00a0<br \/>\ncoughing.\u00a0<br \/>\nMen and women fighting.\u00a0<br \/>\nDoors banging.\u00a0<br \/>\nPeople coming &#038; going all hours&#8230;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI stood &#038; shaded my eyes<br \/>\nfrom the sun glare. They walked across\u00a0<br \/>\nthe street to me.\u00a0<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u201cThis is your father.\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHe had medals on his chest.\u00a0<br \/>\nI stared at him,\u00a0<br \/>\nnot comprehending.\u00a0<br \/>\nHe grabbed me up like a bag of potatoes.\u00a0<br \/>\nWhiskers scraped my cheek.\u00a0<br \/>\nBeer breath frightened me.\u00a0<br \/>\nHe toted me<br \/>\ninto the Central Hotel.\u00a0<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe war was over.\u00a0<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI remember the smells.\u00a0<br \/>\nPeople cooking on hot plates.\u00a0<br \/>\nFish, cans of hash, eggs, stew,<br \/>\npotatoes, onions, cabbage, coffee,\u00a0<br \/>\nanything &#038; everything cheap.\u00a0<br \/>\nAnd then, there was the<br \/>\nhotel manager patrolling the halls.\u00a0<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nLooking for overdue rents.\u00a0<br \/>\nMaybe an open door to stare in.\u00a0<br \/>\nHe smoked big cheap cigars.\u00a0<br \/>\nChewed them till they were wet<br \/>\nthen, he\u2019d hock &#038; spit.\u00a0<br \/>\nUsually he\u2019d miss the open door<br \/>\nhitting the floor instead,\u00a0<br \/>\nthe was followed by a\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cGod Damn\u201d or two.\u00a0<br \/>\nBut<br \/>\nmore powerful than all these odours\u00a0<br \/>\nwas the stench of the mouldering<br \/>\nhallway carpet. That grease-stained,\u00a0<br \/>\npuke-beige carpet. It\u2019s miasma<br \/>\nhung fog like in the halls.\u00a0<br \/>\nThis night<br \/>\nFor reasons I didn\u2019t understand<br \/>\nI was forced to sleep alone<br \/>\nin our hallway leading to the bathroom.\u00a0<br \/>\nHere in the shadows, car headlights<br \/>\nseeped through diaphanous curtains<br \/>\nfrom Diamond Street, and threw<br \/>\nhuge fantastic shapes of black\u00a0<br \/>\nand ghostly white on aged wallpaper.\u00a0<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI cried.\u00a0<br \/>\nUntil he came in a flood of light;<br \/>\nand spanked me till my butt burned.\u00a0<br \/>\nAnd then for the rest of the night,\u00a0<br \/>\nI breathed the stench of dead carpet<br \/>\nand listened to each night sound<br \/>\nwalk by my hall window.\u00a0<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI fell asleep, planning immortal revenge.\u00a0<br \/>\nNot long after this, my father,\u00a0<br \/>\nSpeed disappeared forever.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHis memory still hangs like a fog in my mind.\u00a0<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/little-Steve-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/little-Steve--300x300.jpg\" alt=\"little Steve\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/little-Steve--300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/little-Steve--150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/little-Steve-.jpg 357w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Steve De France is a widely published poet, playwright and essayist both in<br \/>\nAmerica and in Great Britain. His work has appeared in literary<br \/>\npublications in America, England, Canada, France, Ireland, Wales,<br \/>\nScotland, India, Australia, and New Zealand. He has been nominated for a<br \/>\nPushcart Prize in Poetry in both 2002, 2003 &#038; 2006. Recently, his<br \/>\nwork has appeared in The Wallace Stevens Journal, The Mid-American<br \/>\nPoetry Review, Ambit, Atlantic, Clean Sheets, Poetry Bay, The Yellow<br \/>\nMedicine Review and The Sun. In England he won a Reader&#8217;s Award in Orbis<br \/>\nMagazine for his poem &#8220;Hawks.&#8221; In the United States he won the Josh<br \/>\nSamuels&#8217; Annual Poetry Competition (2003) for his poem: &#8220;The Man Who<br \/>\nLoved Mermaids.&#8221; His play THE KILLER had it&#8217;s world premier at the<br \/>\nGARAGE THEATER in Long Beach, California (Sept-October 2006). He has<br \/>\nreceived the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Chapman University for his<br \/>\nwriting.
