\nClerk\u2019s Plea
\n 
\nShould I fall upon my sharpened pencil,
\nNo. 2 lead?
\nShould I leap upon my desk and scream?
\nTerrify everyoneuntil they yell:
\n\u201cYou\u2019re fired!\u201d
\nHelp me.
\nWhat shall I do to escape
\nthe tedious, soul sucking
\noffice.
\n

\nThe Clerk\u2019s Song
\n 
\nHidden in the only ally, unbiased sleep,
\nthe sudden summons rips my exile\u2019s cave.
\nThe clock that serves employers cries:
\nArise! Dazed, apologetic, I mumble:
\n\u201cFive minutes.\u201d Silence the insistent nag,
\nmy wife of passing ticks.
\nStir awake. Oh, no. Overslept.
\nFast wash, dry shave, yesterday\u2019s suit,
\nbreakfastless rush to the bus,
\nthe guilty fears of lateness.
\n\u201cWill he see me sneaking in?
\n\u201cWill he fire me?\u201dOff the bus,
\nfollowing the tardy hips of typists
\nto the subway of suffering.
\nThe brief pause in daylight,
\nthe radiant sun gleams unnoticed,
\nscurry through revolving doors,
\n\u201cGood morning,\u201d to the elevator man,
\narchbishop of boredom.
\nMy floor, entrance, trying to look
\nas if I just stepped out for coffee.
\nThe potent eye of accusation falls on me
\nand I take refuge at my desk.
\nSightless, I stare at my papers
\n(my face my maask of concentration)
\ndreaming time\u2019s faster passage,
\nyet fearful of its passing.
