Authors comment:
\nWriting it in French was a lot easier than trying to translate it into English since the languages are so different. I had to stop and think numerous times about how to say the same thing in English. I don’t envy translators in the least.

En d\u00e9pit de la lamentation

\nSi l\u2019on croit qu\u2019on est \u00e0 m\u00eame de boire \u00e0 sa vie
\n\u00e0 quatre reprises comme boire \u00e0 m\u00eame
\nautant de bouteilles de vin rassi, tout de travers !
\non serait si boulevers\u00e9 par telle une id\u00e9e
\nqu\u2019on se mettrait \u00e0 se trouver
\npris en tout d\u00e9sespoir – et le temps
\naurait semblance de passer bien trop rapidement
\nd\u00e8s cet instant-l\u00e0.
\n 
\nMais moi, je crois bien que la vie
\ndure juste assez longtemps sans ce qu\u2019on se soucie
\nde petits trucs comme \u00e7a.
\nCar ce monde en fait trop des soucis…
\npourquoi donc perdre son temps \u00e0 s\u2019inqui\u00e9ter
\nde ce que les jours ont une limite finie.
\nChacun cherche \u00e0 sa fa\u00e7on de se faire riche et sage,
\nmais personne n\u1fbfy est jamais arriv\u00e9e
\ntout en se fiant na\u00efvement au calendrier
\npour d\u00e9marquer ses accomplissements.
\n 
\nQue les ann\u00e9es sont peu nombreuses !
\n… en d\u00e9pit de tout \u00e7a, l\u2019on doit (sur)vivre… …
\nde jour en jour ni sans perdre le temps
\nni nous inqui\u00e9ter que la vie s\u2019\u00e9coule
\ncomme un fleuve au pr\u00e9cipice
\nvers un avenir … incertain\u2026

\nIn spite of Lamentations
\n 
\nIf one were to believe that one might devise in one\u2019s life
\na time-frame which would be equivalent
\nto comparing life to four bottles of old wine \u2026
\nviz a viz the baby bottle to the IV bottle,
\none would be nonplussed by such an idea
\nto such an extent as to be overwhelmed by despair,
\nand time would seem to pass far too quickly
\nfrom that moment on.
\n 
\nBut myself, I believe totally that life
\npasses in such a way that it\u2019s unnecessary
\nto dwell on such minutiae \u2026
\nSimply put, life contains far too many worries;
\nwhy then waste one\u2019s time worrying
\nsince our days are numbered but we don\u2019t
\nknow how, when or why.
\n 
\nEach of us would hope in his own way
\nto be rich and wise, but one doesn\u2019t arrive there
\nby naively checking days off on a calendar
\nand tying them to life\u2019s accomplishments.
\n 
\nThe years of our lives run out quickly.
\nIn spite of that, we must survive and live
\nfrom day to day without losing time
\nin worrying that the minutes flee
\nlike a river dropping over a precipice
\ntowards an uncertain future.
\n
