\r\n\r\nI\r\n\r\nIn the quiet street an\r\n       unacknowledged jettatore<\/em> fixes upon\r\n           a passing feline.\r\n\r\nII\r\n\r\nAs the modern cars move\r\n   parallel to grey pedestrians.\r\nI take a strong dislike \r\n   to a malefic debauchee\u2014he\u2019s\r\n   too shoulder-close at the newspaper stand.\r\n\r\nIII\r\n\r\nOut and about after the airline trip\r\n   I radiate ojas\u2014apparently the women\r\nof the city like treacle \r\n   (thankfully I do not smell \r\n    like the corpse of hatred).\r\n\r\nIV\r\n\r\nThough I have not met \r\n    the approaching academics, their\r\nundulatory waves press me\r\n    breathless against a concrete wall\u2014\r\nI almost drop the morning paper.\r\n\r\nV\r\n\r\nIn the hotel lobby, whilst savouring \r\n    breakfast odours, a passing porter \r\nattempts to mesmerise me with potent od\u2014\r\n    I dodge the fluid emotion\r\nmake for the lift \r\n    and a workaday shower.\r\n\r\nVI\r\n\r\nThose aesthetic goldfish, multicoloured\r\n    creatures of coral, frenzy up\r\nas I pass\u2014I experiment: my hands\r\n    comfort or incite\r\nat random, at toss of a dollar coin.\r\n\r\nSeems \r\n    I am naturally beneficent\u2014\r\n    they will not need the fish-food\r\nfor six times seven days.\r\n\r\nVII\r\n\r\nThough diseased guests are\r\n    locked in luxury suites\r\nI am forced to brave the un-medicinal air\r\n    of their corridor jaunts\u2014right here:\r\nthe excrescent energy of a lover\r\n    stifling to his beloved.\r\nI\u2019m exhausted as I reach the door\r\n    of my own room.\r\n\r\nVIII\r\n\r\nHaving showered I sleep\r\n     to alleviate the tiredness, notice\r\n     in the sprawling that\r\nthis hand \r\n     soothes the solar plexus\r\nthis other \r\n     draws living juice\r\nfrom the liberated heart\u2014the transfer \r\n           is intense\r\n a three hour dialysis.\r\n\r\nIX\r\n\r\nOver-looking\r\n     dim-lit rectangles\r\nsolid with brick and concrete, \r\n     cold steel and mathematical, I feel \r\na rush of love\u2014this I direct,\r\n     squeeze gently from the tea-bag\r\n     (comes rich aroma)\u2014then collapse\r\namong conference paraphernalia, all\r\n     strewn upon the double bed\u2014\r\nand know for the first time, with relief, \r\n    that your tumor will be benign\r\n    (will heal itself).\r\n\r\nX\r\n\r\nIt is the same day\r\n     in a different city, and\r\nthe evening undresses, \r\n     opens the temporal gate\r\n          wide enough ajar, that I\r\ncan place my foot in the door.\r\n\r\nAs I do, I clasp the relic\r\n      you gave me\u2014makes vivid\r\nour charmed purpose.\r\n\r\nYou know that stone?\r\n      I remember it\r\nabout your neck. \r\n\r\nAs I imagine\r\n     it positively glows\r\nand I know \r\n     that you like me to think \r\n     about you, even\r\nfrom a great distance.\r\n \r\n \r\n\"Ian<\/a>\r\n\r\n<\/strong><\/pre>\n

\nIan Irvine is an Australian-based poet\/lyricist, fiction writer and non-fiction writer:

\nHis work has featured in many Australian and international publications, including <\/span>Fire<\/i><\/span> (UK) \u2018Anthology of 20<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> Century and Contemporary Poets,\u2019 (2008) which contained the work of poets from over 60 nations.<\/span> His work has also appeared in a number of Australian national poetry anthologies, and he is the author of <\/span>three books<\/span> and co-editor of many more (including <\/span>Scintillae 2012,<\/i><\/span> an anthology of work by over 50 Victorian and international writers and poets). He currently teaches writing and literature at Bendigo TAFE and Victoria University (Melbourne) and lives with fellow writer Sue King-Smith and their children on a 5 acre block near Bendigo, Australia.<\/span><\/strong>
