\n 
\nBubbling, taunting, time’s dark tide,
\neach eddy swirled,
\nin sagging flesh;
\nIn days, in hours, speeds our slide,
\nour being hurled,
\nto tomb from cr\u00e8che.
\nNo sooner fecund than denied;
\nDisdain time’s breakneck, lethal ride.
\n 
\nCrack boned, withered, stooped and bent,
\neach moment run,
\nfolds ‘pon its mate;
\nLife’s blood, creeping, near to spent,
\neach rising sun,
\nadds yet its weight.
\nAnd thus each second ‘thout relent;
\nIn crushing, marketh man’s descent.
\n 
\nWeak’ning, feebled, sinews strain,
\nto beg their frame,
\nonce more erect;
\nWanting, trying, through the pain,
\nto brief reclaim,
\nlost self respect.
\nHow vengeful gods make years our bane;
\nWhen potent youth’s spent wraiths remain.
\n 
\nMirrored, frowning, lines portray,
\neach furrow ploughed,
\nwithout consent;
\nScribing deep each steel edged day,
\nIn veins stood proud and wrinkles lent.
\nThus revelling in man’s decay;
\nDoes time our swift’ning span display.
\n 
\nKnowledge, hard won, weights its worth,
\n‘gainst failing mind,
\nthat scarce recalls;
\nWisdom, harboured, from man’s birth,
\nTo nought consigned,
\nwets where he falls.
\nA lake of tears, a cup of mirth;
\nTo silent slake some acrid earth.
\n 
\nHard life, hard passed, fades to grey,
\nconsigned to dust,
\nall trials borne;
\nEach pain endured, cold away,
\neach love each lust,
\ncut down like corn.
\nNo mem’ries triumph o’er decay;
\nNone worthed above another’s fey.
\n 
\nLiving’s harvest, loving stored,
\nlays doomed to soil,
\nto rank decay;
\nEach ear, each grain, scant reward,
\nall life’s cruel toil,
\npassed dark away.
\nNo bellies filled with living’s hoard;
\nIts sum from nought, to nought restored.
\n 
\nConq’ring, lacking, coined the same,
\nno winnings pays,
\nnor debt foregoes;
\nDies cast, random, call the game,
\nYet not one day’s,
\ntheir falling owes.
\nSham spoils the cheated victors claim;
\nWhen whispers time the Reaper’s name.
\n 
\nComes the darkness, comes the why,
\nwe pain to live,
\nfor naught but this;
\nTo bear each blow, breathe each sigh,
\nour all to give,
\nfor one cold kiss.
\nIn death’s embrace from womb we lie;
\nEach moment lived to naught but die!
\n

BIO:
\nSullivan The Poet
\nBorn a British subject of an English mother and Irish catholic father in the late January of \u201f53; \u201eSullivan\u201f spent his early years with his family in the Far East. Returning with his parents to England in the late fifties where he was subsequently educated.
\n 
\nThereafter pursuing what could perhaps be best described as a broadly colourful career; with callings as diverse as gun dealer and consultant, freelance journalist, magazine editor, commercial photographer, publican, fleet limousine operator, lecturer and an unpaid \u201eSpecial Needs\u201f tutor: To name but a few – even a brief spell under the flag enjoying the Queen\u201fs shilling!

\nThroughout which the only truly common thread has been his writing, an enduring passion never completely abandoned; Fuelled by his lifelong fascination with not only the beauty of the English language and its literature in general, but the richness and diversity of its poetry in particular. A fascination well illustrated in the almost perverse multiplicity of styles and subject matter contained within this slim volume and others…
