{"id":2591,"date":"2014-05-29T19:16:23","date_gmt":"2014-05-29T19:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/?p=2591"},"modified":"2015-03-27T00:52:02","modified_gmt":"2015-03-27T00:52:02","slug":"they-smile-with-stiletto-eyes-poem-by-joseph-armstead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/they-smile-with-stiletto-eyes-poem-by-joseph-armstead\/","title":{"rendered":"They Smile With Stiletto Eyes Poem by Joseph Armstead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>something twisted and brittle<br \/>\ngrows imperiously<br \/>\nunder the burning glare<br \/>\nfrom a distant dying sun<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\ncrippled souls swimming<br \/>\norange panoramic skies, open and vast,<br \/>\nthe high frontier<br \/>\nstreaked with thin purple scars<br \/>\nand elongated, julienned cuts<br \/>\nof flashing metallic azure,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nthe bloom reaches towards<br \/>\nthe ruins of Heaven<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nin the perfume of its rosy musk, the voices of ghosts&#8230;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThey smile with stiletto eyes at tomorrow.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nDialogue:<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHer &#8212; &#8220;It&#8217;s the sound of the telephone,<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t you see, that electronic bleating,<br \/>\nthat sudden, startling interruption<br \/>\nof your thoughts, its the absence<br \/>\nof THAT<br \/>\nwhich is the thing that makes me saddest&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHim &#8212; &#8220;Black coffee fills my leaden limbs<br \/>\nwith the acid from my numbed mind,<br \/>\nI&#8217;m just tired sometimes, weary,<br \/>\nlethargic,<br \/>\nand it helps me summon the energy<br \/>\nto face the dragons beckoning me<br \/>\nfrom the wasteland at the edges of the map&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nNarrator &#8212; &#8220;They converse in an alien tongue,<br \/>\ntheir out-of-synch voices pitched<br \/>\njust beyond the range of human hearing,<br \/>\nbut they speak volumes to one another<br \/>\nthrough the staring bleakness of their eyes.<br \/>\nA disjointed exchange of discontent,<br \/>\nit is a gift of unwanted predestination.&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe audience is confounded.<br \/>\nTheir ennui is as solid<br \/>\nas the bars to a prison.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHer &#8212; &#8220;I can&#8217;t stop crying,<br \/>\nknowing I&#8217;ll never<br \/>\nfeel that way again.&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHim &#8212; &#8220;They won&#8217;t break me.<br \/>\nI won&#8217;t let them.  I owe it<br \/>\nto all the wounds that mark me.&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe audience blinks and remains unmoved.<br \/>\nVision is defined as hypercompetence<br \/>\nin<br \/>\ndiscernment<br \/>\nor<br \/>\nperception.<br \/>\nAnd if they see anything, they see dissonance.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThey smile with stiletto eyes at the image of a strangled eternity.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nin ashes, the gnarled flora hungers,<br \/>\nseeking nourishment<br \/>\nin the crumbs left<br \/>\nfrom a banquet of the dead,<br \/>\nand an entrepot of melody<br \/>\nreleasing its goods,<br \/>\nan unfinished symphony<br \/>\nfrom an alienated, tone-deaf<br \/>\norchestra pouring in<br \/>\nthrough the colorful, ragged tears<br \/>\nin the fabric of unstable Reality,<br \/>\nwashes like the ocean tide<br \/>\nacross a celestial Sahara<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nstarlight feeds the thirteenth rose of hell<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nand the velvety carmine blossom<br \/>\nunfurls its bloody petals to catch<br \/>\ntainted brilliance<br \/>\ncascading<br \/>\nonto the specters<br \/>\nof a concrete and steel<br \/>\nanthill,<br \/>\nstaring<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThey smile with stiletto eyes at weeping nothingness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>BIO<\/strong><br clear=\"none\" \/><strong> <\/strong><br clear=\"none\" \/><strong>Joseph Armstead is a suspense-thriller and horror author living in the United States&#8217; San Francisco Bay Area.   Author of a dozen short stories and ten novels, his poetry has been published in a wide range of online journals, webzines and print magazines.
