Why do Americans detest the French?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The answer is patently simple and plain:<\/strong><\/p>\n

but it gives U.S. national pride a wrench.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The French find senseless warfare inane,<\/strong><\/p>\n

teach their kids to think for themselves,<\/strong><\/p>\n

to study — and never to drop out of school.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Faced with a problem, the Frenchman delves<\/strong><\/p>\n

to the bottom, isn’t shown as a fool<\/strong><\/p>\n

by taking religious inanities to heart.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Frenchman knows there’s a world out there,<\/strong><\/p>\n

and never puts the horse before Descartes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He’s wily, tenacious, tough and aware.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Famed as a lover, he’ll fight if he must,<\/strong><\/p>\n

but invades no one if his cause is not just.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jim Dunlap’s poetry has been published extensively in print and online in the United States, England, France, India, Australia, Switzerland and New Zealand. His work has appeared in over 90 publications, including Potpourri, Candelabrum, Mobius, Poems Niedernasse, and the Paris\/Atlantic.
