<\/pre>\n
We are never quite done<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0with the gloomy castle<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0it shadows all our domestic hours<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0 from birth through the sapling years<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0and on.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0It stands on a steep embankment<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0surrounded by a thick, dark forest<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0and from its battlements<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 unlucky souls observe in the distance<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0a glass-green ocean<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0a starry firmament.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0Below, in the icy castle grounds, <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 huddle mournful souls<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0freezing and forgotten by all<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 but their closest kin\u2014<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0a melancholy place<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0but nothing eternal to it.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0The sun that rises elsewhere<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 will not penetrate this structure<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0hidden as it is, under northern mists, <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0wizard spells and optical illusions <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0of light and dark.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n
Though the city is your new mistress<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 you may encounter this castle<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0in dreams<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0animated by an almost human moon,<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0the eerie chatter of small <\/span><\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0flitting things\u2014not exactly bats\u2014<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0and damp torches burning tentatively<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0on, towering ramparts. <\/span><\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n
 <\/p>\n
\u00a0And you may encounter stone griffins <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0 or other frozen phantasmagoria ,<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0 and ponder why it is <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0that you always approach Her<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0 in the dark <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0with frost stinging your skin<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0and the air painful to breathe.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0And there\u2019s never any wind <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0it\u2019s always so still and ponderous\u2014 <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0like a painting:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0an ocean of souls (anticipating fire)<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0ominous clouds (dull and lifeless)<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0and<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0the muddled heavens<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
\u00a0so vast, so domed, so utterly silent. <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ian Irvine is an Australian-based poet\/lyricist, fiction writer and non-fiction writer. His work has featured in many Australian and international publications, including <\/span>Fire<\/i><\/span> (UK) \u2018Anthology of 20<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> Century and Contemporary Poets,\u2019 (2008) which contained the work of poets from over 60 nations.<\/span>His work has also appeared in a number of Australian national poetry anthologies, and he is the author of <\/span>three books<\/span> and co-editor of many more (including <\/span>Scintillae 2012,<\/i><\/span> an anthology of work by over 50 Victorian and international writers and poets). He currently teaches writing and literature at Bendigo TAFE and Victoria University (Melbourne) and lives with fellow writer Sue King-Smith and their children on a 5 acre block near Bendigo, Australia.<\/span><\/strong>
