He ripped away the patriotic fog <\/b><\/p>\n
by painting scenes of brutal blood and gore, <\/b><\/p>\n
of tedium and unrelenting slog <\/b><\/p>\n
to show the world the horrors of the war. <\/b><\/p>\n
He learned from all the greatest of the age. <\/b><\/p>\n
Sassoon would coax from him his finest art: <\/b><\/p>\n
the voice that told a generation\u2019s rage, <\/b><\/p>\n
with passions stolen from a broken heart. <\/b><\/p>\n
When all was won and death still greater waste, <\/b><\/p>\n
he gave his life as millions had before. <\/b><\/p>\n
The news gave peace a lasting bitter taste, <\/b><\/p>\n
and emphasised the dreadful final score. <\/b><\/p>\n
There is no sweet and fitting way to die; <\/b><\/p>\n
his verses showed the world that greatest lie. <\/b><\/p>\n

Of himself, he says, \u201cI started writing poetry for others when I included brief rhymes in Christmas cards for a group of lovely young ladies about five years ago, but had always played with the sound of words for my own amusement.
