\"Don\"<\/a><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The wind picks up.\u00a0\u00a0 Encased in a tent, I’m attached to a kite<\/strong><\/p>\n

about to take flight,<\/strong><\/p>\n

and tonight I’m thankful for plastic.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The rain fly strains at the sown straps, tent stakes, and plastic snaps,<\/strong><\/p>\n

and I, tucked inside, watch the walls bend and \u00a0buckle,<\/strong><\/p>\n

then snap back in place.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dry, I peek out the transparent screen knowing the low clouds<\/strong><\/p>\n

reflecting the city lights of Santa Fe,<\/strong><\/p>\n

make the plateau a dull gray as a smattering of raindrops fall.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the morning, green grass, white cactus flower,<\/strong><\/p>\n

Indian Paintbrush, brown volcanic rock,<\/strong><\/p>\n

and two unknown peaks, bathed in morning light, frame us as we pack up.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The wind picks up.\u00a0 On my bike, I’m attached to my bike pedals by shoes,<\/strong><\/p>\n

and my legs push at the pedals<\/strong><\/p>\n

and today I’m thankful for muscle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong><\/p>\n

All the guidebooks suggested I might see horses,<\/strong><\/p>\n

but we don’t and find our way back to the road<\/strong><\/p>\n

and set out towards our car.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How much personal space must a cow need?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Clearly timid and afraid, they run, never away or across the road and up,<\/strong><\/p>\n

but together they run in the same direction that we travel<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Separated from others by a barbed wire fence,<\/strong><\/p>\n

two calves run away from us and along the fence with the others<\/strong><\/p>\n

on the other side.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

They always run, and at times,<\/strong><\/p>\n

the calf has to skirt too close as the fence line and road converge<\/strong><\/p>\n

and it panics, skips ahead even faster causing the others to full on sprint as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally, they somehow squeak through the fence and find themselves with the others.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I can\u2019t find a break in the fence<\/strong><\/p>\n

and wonder how they suddenly crossed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What process did it go through to go through the fence?<\/strong><\/p>\n

To decide that enough was enough?<\/strong><\/p>\n

To suddenly find themselves with a fence behind instead of always in front?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Are there fences that I run along?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Are there fences that move on without a break<\/strong><\/p>\n

that I can just walk through?<\/strong><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For 10 years we ran along the fence<\/strong><\/p>\n

and never looked for a break<\/strong><\/p>\n

and now we see the family that may never be ours.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Science has its limits.<\/strong><\/p>\n

No more clomid,<\/strong><\/p>\n

the hysterosalpingogram was enough to say stop.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a room, with diagrams and machines,<\/strong><\/p>\n

all the plumbing’s in place and the data confirms what we know.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Time is a calf running out.\u00a0 Life is a series of fences.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
