SHADOWS FOR BAIT

Leafless trees
pass winter days
tantalizing fish
by casting shadows
in the lake.

But the fish don't bite,
their fear of choking
much too great to take the chance.

Were they to,
imagine tomorrow's headline:

"Fish Swallows Tree and Strangles."

Wildlife advocates
would seize the moment
and take the woods to court.

Speechless before a judge,
woods without a plea.
