Christmas Elegy
Wonder of the lights and of the lonely nights
To spend another holiday alone
Try everything to make the day go by
Then there’s a reflection -- the want in her eyes
the need to break down
My God, I thought I saw an angel, abiding in the light
with open arms, I approached in trust
As a child turned into mother, grandmother, great grandmother
to fight in truthfulness, honesty and hope
in hopes that have turned to dust
I gave all of me, every morsel of my soul
And I’ve been told by most, that God has a plan for me
After 57 years, doubt prevails amidst my thoughts
For, the dreamer has awakened from her Cinderella fantasy
And the soot of life clings to her heart strings
-- so dry, so dirty, it won’t wash away
I want to be a part of some thing, one thing
To place the sparkles of tinsel and ornaments upon a fresh pine
To sit beside the tree with candles all around, and be filled with life
To share a glass of wine
to make a wish on this frosty Christmas night
Look outside my window with me
See the beauty and the whiteness of the new fallen snow
The moon, it shines through the clouds as the snow falls
I can’t believe that I am alone, on such a gorgeous night
The Thompson River reflects the mountains on the water
And in the distance, you can hear the chimes
It’s an oh so peaceful night, such a gentle night
But not a night to be alone … Merry Christmas
