THE MISTRESS
© Sara L. Russell 1999

I have marinaded in honey and milk
the body you love as your own,
conjured alabaster and silk
from mortal flesh and bone,
and I have tender fruit enough
to bring your lips to sighs
and I am ready for your love
and all your pretty lies.

I have poured out the rich, red wine
you love to savour so well;
the summer of France, sweet and divine
a potion for a spell.
I will put summer in your heart
and bid winter be late,
and you will tear my love apart
as always is my fate.

I have put on my dress of midnight sky
my pearls of silver moon,
a feather stole light as a sigh
and you will be here soon.
My kiss is softer than spring rain
I will kiss your cares away
and I can make you come again
but I can't make you stay.
