IN OLD JAPAN
There are a few of us
Still around
Who can recall a Japan
That fabricated origami
From old tin cans.
Ingenious little toys
That would disassemble
At a sneezeWith sharp edges that cut.
Not permitted today.
A sheet metal boat
Powered by a candle
That went "put, put, put".
They sent us tiny paper flowers
In glasine envelopes
That looked like tiny hairs
Until placed in water.
There they opened into
Colorful bouquets.
Not so obviously,
They fashioned
The New York City
Third avenue elevated railway
Into death
For Manchuria and
For us.
The Chinese
Are a clever people too.
