JUST ONE HEARTBEAT

Just one beat of the heart from you
is where I stand
As an island, a barren island
In a vast ocean
Reaching out for a firm hand
     To grasp

You are desert -- I am water
I look for dry land to irrigate and bring life
To create an oasis
Still your heart remains __ a beat away

I am ocean, sending waves against Gibraltar
Eroding and turning rock to sand
A mermaid who has risen from the depths
Never to find her ocean again
Always chasing rainbows and dreams
Never quite catching the joy of a truth
     It seems
Such a daunting trail of tears I follow
For the sake of one heart to beat closer to mine

Ask the sun to fall from the sky
And ask GOD why
Still __ no answer
For a heart knows its heart
And cannot change its nature
It must find its own fire
without coercion
And must stay, for this time
     one heartbeat away
