if you want me to poem by Rebecca Buchanan

if you want me to
I’ll comb the hair from your eyes
and help you with your jacket

if you want me to
I’ll pick flowers for you
along side the road
a hand full of paper thin poppies
red and pink and orange

if you want me to
I’ll lead you to the water
I’ll let you drink
icy cold water
from a small
cup
I keep in my pocket

if you want me to
I’ll hold your hand and walk
beside you
I’ll give you balance
we’ll go where you want to go
as long as we’re home before dark

if you want me to
I’ll sit beside you
when you are deciding which road
to take home
I’ll adjust your scarf before you go
and I’ll give you
a kiss
on the top of your head
for good luck
and safe travel

if you want me to
